Xudong Zhang

Biographical Narrative

Dr. Xudong Zhang is Professor of Comparative Literature and Professor of Chinese Studies at New York University, where he chairs the Department of East Asian Studies and directs NYU China House. He is also Cheung Kong Lecture Professor at Peking University, a recurring visiting professorship endowed by the PRC Ministry of Education and Li Kar Sing’s Cheung Kong Group in Hong Kong. In that capacity he directs the PKU International Center for Critical Theory, which is an integral part of the ICCT network. Dr. Zhang’s other notable visiting positions and joint-appointments in China include “Zijiang Chair Professor”in Chinese and Comparative Literature at ECNU; the Founding Member of the Academic Committee and Specially Appointed Professor in the Institute of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences at Fudan University; and, most recently, University Professor in the Humanities and founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Chongqing University.

Dorn in 1965 in Beijing, Xudong Zhang grew up in Shanghai and received his primary and secondary education there. He received his B.A. in Chinese language and literature from Peking University in 1986 and Ph.D. in literature from Duke University in 1995. Prior to coming to the U.S. in 1990, he worked at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing for three years as a Lecturer in art theory. From 1995-1998, Dr. Zhang taught at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey’s Department of East Asian Language and Cultures. In 1998-99, he was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship in the Humanities and conducted post-doctoral research at New York University’s International Center for Advanced Studies (ICAS).

A prolific scholar writing in both English and Chinese, Dr. Zhang is the author of a dozen books in literary criticism and literary theory, political philosophy, and modern Chinese culture. In English, he is the author of Chinese Modernism in the Era of Reforms (1997) and Postsocialism and Cultural Politics—China in the Last Decade of the Twentieth Century (2008), editor of Postmodernism and China (2000) and Whither China—Intellectual Politics of Contemporary China (2001), and has contributed to journals such as South Atlantic Quarterly, Social Text, New Literary History, Boundary 2, New Left Review, Positions, and Culture Critique. In Chinese, he has been a regular contributor to the leading literary, cultural and intellectual journals such as Dushu, Literary Review, Studies in Literature and Art, Frontier, and Open Times, translated and edited foundational works by Walter Benjamin and Fredric Jameson, and is the author of The Order of the Imaginary (1998, Oxford Univ. Press, Hong Kong), Traces of Criticism (2003, Sanlian shudian, Beijing), Cultural Identity in the Age of Globalization—A Historical Rethinking on Western Universalism (2005; 2006, Peking Univ. Press), Letters from New York (2006, Shanghai shudian) and A Discourse on The Age of Enlightenment (2008, Sanlian shudian, Beijing).

Among his forthcoming coming publications in Chinese and English are monographs on Lu Xun, Hegel’s aesthetics, Walter Benjamin, as well as collection of essays and articles on contemporary Chinese literature and culture; and on comparative literature and political philosophy.

A passionate teacher, Dr. Zhang was instrumental in establishing a doctoral program in East Asian Studies at New York University and served as the inaugural Director of Graduate Studies in East Asian Culture at NYU between 2003 and 2006. He is currently advising a cohort of more than 12 doctoral students in NYU’s Comparative Literature and East Asian Studies Departments, and in the Chinese Departments at East China Normal University and Peking University, where he holds a recurring visiting Chair. He regularly gives summer and winter research seminars and colloquia in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo, both to carry out his academic duties and as part of an ever expanding international exchange and cooperation program which he has established over the past years. International Center for Critical Theory is but one of the examples. Now formally established at Peking University, ICCT is designed as an international research and training consortium with equal partners at NYU, East China Normal University (ECNU), and University of Tokyo, all contributing financially and institutionally to this joint effort. Since the inception of ICCT in Summer 2009, Dr. Zhang has raised over $2 million for this project. Among his recently taught courses are Hegel’s aesthetics; Rereading Lu Xun; Frankfurt School; Rethinking Enlightenment in Global Context; and Mao as Political Philosophy.

In addition to teaching and scholarly research, Dr. Zhang is a socially engaging intellectual, giving public speeches and discussions on issues of public concern, and is a sought-after expert on contemporary Chinese culture and society by national and international media. He has been interviewed by and reported upon in CBS 60 Minutes, New York Times, New York Public Television, BBC, National Public Radio, Canadian Broadcast Corporation, Far East Economic Review, Wenhuipao, People’s Daily Network, and Twentieth Century Economic Report.
