Conference Theme
From the local to the global levels, environmental and ecological issues pose pressing economic, social and political challenges to citizens and governments the world over. Yet, as witnessed in Copenhagen in December 2009, effective action continues to lag. Moreover, new threats to environmental justice and security continue to emerge. Who is responsible for and who bears the heaviest costs of the dual threats of environmental degradation and delayed action? Is this a question of environmental security or of environmental justice –or both? How do economic, social, and political inequalities shape environmental challenges and policy responses across the globe? What role do gender, race, and class play in questions of environmental justice or environmental security? What effect does globalization have? Where does stewardship fit in? In what innovative ways are the world’s peoples, civil society organizations and governments responding to environmental challenges at local, regional, national and international levels? How can the interdisciplinary field of International Studies contribute to a meaningful discussion of these questions and find viable solutions to the serious environmental challenges we face?
While paper and panel proposals by professional scholars or practitioners on any topic relating to international studies are welcome, those relating to the conference theme of “International Studies, Environmental Security and Environmental Justice: From the Local to the Global Levels” are especially welcome. Graduate students are encouraged to submit paper proposals and, if accepted, to compete in the ISA-South Jim Winkates Graduate Student Paper Competition (see details below). The Program Chair also welcomes paper submissions from outstanding undergraduate students with faculty sponsors for a dedicated poster session and/or a special panel featuring outstanding undergraduate research (only accepted submissions from undergraduate students able to attend the conference with faculty sponsors can be considered).
