New Research in the History of Warfare
Introduction
Warfare is undoubtedly amongst the most important factors, and indeed constants, in the course of history. The prominence of warfare in the human experience has ensured continual writing on warfare since the beginnings of the professional study of history across the world. Much of this writing has focused on warfare in the context of military history, and the conduct of war itself.
This conference intends to bring together a wide range of perspectives and provide an interdisciplinary forum for the debate of new research concerning the history of warfare. It seeks to bring together 'classical' military historians, students of grand strategy and operational military history, with 'new' military historians, those looking at the social history of armies, military culture and the experience of war for those involved in it.
The conference will have both chronological and thematic panels each with a senior academic presiding as chair over three to four graduate delegates. Chronologically, panels will focus on the Ancient World, Medieval Period, Early-Modern Period and Modern History. Thematically, the panels will focus on subjects such as, but not limited to, international relations, world history, naval warfare and the history of Intelligence. All will be followed by open discussion and opportunities for communal debate. In addition, it is intended to have about three plenary sessions with presentations by senior academics.
