ASA (American Society for Aesthetics) Annual Meeting
October 27 - 30, 2010, Victoria , British Columbia
Call for papers
The American Society for Aesthetics invites submissions of papers and panels in all areas of interest to members for its 2010 Annual Meeting. The Program Committee also would like to propose a general theme for this meeting partly in recognition of our returning to Canada for the first time in a number of years, Crossing Borders: Exploring Connections Between Philosophical Aesthetics and Other Studies of the Arts. The proposed theme aims to encourage submissions that investigate intersections between philosophical aesthetics and the various arts that constitute its subject matter, and that express the diverse intellectual, demographic, philosophical, and artistic sources the Society could represent. We hope here also to avail ourselves of the unique cultural opportunities that crossing over into Western Canada affords. To these ends, the Program Committee invites submission of work on such topics as:
Aesthetics, Anthropology, and Indigenous Arts
Philosophical Issues in Art Curatorship
Theatre, Performance Art, and the Philosophy of Performance
Issues of Race, Gender, and Class in Contemporary Aesthetics
Intersections of Art History and Philosophical Inquiry into the Arts
Paul Kristeller’s Modern System of the Arts
Beauty, Art, and Politics
Music and Susanne Langer’s Philosophy (in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of her death)
The Philosophical Significance of Michael Baxandall’s Art Historical Work
David Hume’s Aesthetics (in honor of the impending 300th anniversary of his birth)
Submissions should not exceed 3000 words, and should have a brief (100 word) abstract attached. Paper submissions should be prepared for blind review (i.e., without the author’s name appearing on the title page or within the header). Panel proposals must be submitted by January 15, 2010, and should begin with a brief description of the topic and include names of each of the participants together with abstracts of their papers. All submissions should be sent electronically to Daniel Nathan, the Chair of the Program Committee, at daniel.nathan@ttu.edu.
Submission deadline: March 1, 2010
