LSA Early Career Workshop 2014

The Law and Society Association is pleased to announce the Early Career Workshop to be held May 27 and May 28, 2014, immediately preceding the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Law and Society Association.  This workshop is for scholars in the early stages of the careers, either in the first three years on their initial appointment or in a post-doctoral position, and whose research interests include socio-legal studies in any field.

The Association will reimburse your expenses to attend the Workshop up to $250 for those traveling from within North America, $450 for those traveling from outside North America.  (All reimbursement will be in US dollars.)

The Early Career Workshop provides a forum for young scholars interested in socio-legal studies to gain a better understanding of the field, share their work and receive feedback on how to improve it.  The Workshop will be structured to facilitate informal discussions and networking over meals and during breaks.  It will feature discussion panels and small working groups in which participants will present their work and receive feedback from their peers and invited faculty.

In assessing each participant’s work, we will explore the following types of questions:

· What are the underlying assumptions about the nature of law implicit in the analysis? 

· How does the work relate to the broader field of law and society scholarship? To more mainstream disciplinary fields?  To audiences outside of our traditional scholarly communities?

· Are the data and methods appropriate for the questions asked?  How might they be improved?

· Given their research interests, which publication outlets and LSA Collaborative Research Networks (CRNs) would be most promising for the participants?  

· How do we plan interdisciplinary careers in departments and universities that award tenure in traditional disciplines?  Can we develop career opportunities that connect our ideas to action?

Participants will be asked to submit a current working paper or a detailed project description in advance of the Workshop and be prepared to contribute actively to the sessions.  This year’s planning committee is co-chaired by Jeb Barnes, University of Southern California, and Anna-Maria Marshall, University of Illinois.  The faculty also includes Thomas Hilbink (Open Society Foundation), Ron Levi (University of Toronto), and Victoria Saker Woeste (American Bar Foundation). Up to twenty scholars will be selected to participate.
