Imagining India as a World Power: Asian Politics, the Indian Ocean, and Balancing Forces

As the world prepares for welcoming a powerhouse China, it is the rising India that needs to be taken note of to gain perspective on the shape of international politics that is likely to emerge in the coming years. Given the current rate of its economic growth, India’s emergence as the next great power can happen sometimes just a decade after China assumes its position at the top. India, already the dominant player in South Asian politics, has gained a strong footing in the international pecking order with the signing of Indo-US nuclear agreement and signi cant support for its claim for a permanent seat in the Security Council. In South Asia it can be speculated that India will be welcomed as a major power by Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh without much of unease. The unseen in this equation is how other great powers will approach their relationship with India in decades to come for maintaining regional and global balance. It also remains to be seen what role India plays through the international economic regimes in maintaining stability in international trade and economy. The policies of other great powers and international regimes will be an important determinant of the place that India will take in the global balance of power.

Accepted participants will be provided accommodation, meals, and conference materials during
the two-day event. All conference papers will also be considered for publication by the India Journal of Social Enquiry from Delhi University after the conference. Registration Fee of $95.00 will cover materials and logistics for the conference, participants are responsible for their own airfare from and to Delhi, India.
