CCBH Summer Conference 2010

The 1970s marked a watershed in post-war British history with economic crises and profound political and social discord precipitating major social, cultural, political and economic changes with enduring consequences. Three decades after the ‘winter of discontent’ and the election of Margaret Thatcher, and with the papers now fully open, this major interdisciplinary conference will reassess developments in this crucial decade, placing them in the context of postwar British history as a whole. Subjects covered include the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, devolution, the environment, social policy, civil liberties, economic policy, Empire and decolonisation, women and work, Northern Ireland, trade unions and politics and literature.

Speakers at the conference include: James Cronin, Jim Tomlinson, Andy Beckett, Sue Harper, Bruce Schulman and Francis Wheen. There will be a witness seminar on 'Rock Promoters in the 1970s' on Wednesday 7 July. The full programme will be available shortly.

Conference attenders are cordially invited to the Pimlott Lecture on Thursday 8 July at 6pm. This will be given by Professor Frank Mort on 'London and the Making of the Permissive Society. This is a public lecture in the Beveridge Hall, Senate House, and is open to all.
